The Saratoga Hair Center at Williams

If you are dealing with hair loss, it is easy to get overwhelmed by claims online.

Hair transplant surgery involves carefully relocating your own healthy follicles from a donor area, usually the back or sides of the scalp, to areas that are balding. While the concept is straightforward, the procedure itself requires careful planning, precision, and experienced surgical oversight.

At The Saratoga Hair Center at Williams, we have provided hair restoration surgery since 1989. Our clinic is located in Latham, NY, and we see patients from the upstate area, and beyond. We also offer virtual consultations for those who travel to our clinic from out of state.

Your personalized treatment plan is built around what will look natural now and still look realistic later. This includes how the hairline is designed, how density is placed, and how donor hair is managed.

Patients looking for a hair transplant in Albany often choose our Latham clinic because it allows for procedure planning, privacy, and continuity of care in one location. Most consultations are scheduled within driving distance of Albany and the surrounding Capital Region.

Meet Your Surgeon

Hair transplant results depend heavily on planning and technique. Your care at Saratoga Hair is led by Dr. Keimun Slaughter, who is double board-certified in Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and is also an associate member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).

Patients often mention that their results look natural and are designed to match their age, not a trend.

What a Hair Transplant Actually Does

Hair transplantation surgery is a restoration procedure, where hair is moved from a “safe donor” area, which is located on the back and sides of the head, and moved to an area of hair loss. Transplanted hair is considered permanent as the follicles are resistant to the testosterone conversion to DHT. Non-transplanted hair may continue to thin and bald if the patient is predestined to hair loss.

The Two Hair Transplant Methods We Offer

Saratoga Hair focuses on two methods of harvesting: FUE and FUT. This page is the overview. Click the links below to see more details on each procedure type.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

FUE involves harvesting follicular units individually, one by one, from the donor area and placing them into the recipient area. You do not have a linear incision “scar” and it is commonly chosen by patients who want the option of shorter hairstyles.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT involves removing a narrow strip from the donor area, then separating follicles for placement. FUT can be a strong option for patients who need a larger number of grafts, depending on donor characteristics and long-term planning.

Which Method Is Better, FUE or FUT?

The honest answer is that it depends.

Some patients are better suited to FUE. Others get the best long-term outcome with FUT. The right method is chosen based on:

  • Your hair loss pattern and likely progression
  • Donor density and scalp characteristics
  • How many grafts you actually need
  • The hairstyle you want to wear
  • The most conservative way to protect donor supply

If you are seeing clinics push only one method, that is a limitation. Saratoga Hair offers both.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Hair Transplant Surgery?

A consultation is the only way to confirm candidacy, but strong candidates usually have:

  • Patterned hair loss that is predictable
  • Enough donor hair to create meaningful coverage
  • Realistic expectations about density
  • A plan that fits long-term, not just the next few months

If you have had old-style grafts in the past and hate the look, the practice also discusses techniques used to repair older “pluggy” results using smaller grafts. For more information, here is a video in which Dr. Slaughter explains in further detail.

Recovery and Results Timeline

On surgery day, you’ll come in early in the morning and typically be done by mid to late afternoon. Patients stay awake during the procedure and often spend the time watching a movie or Netflix in a calm, comfortable setting. Tune in to hear Dr. Slaughter explain.

Early healing involves short-term redness and small scabs. Some shedding of transplanted hairs in the first weeks is common. New growth happens gradually over months. At six months post procedure, the transplanted hair starts to fully appear. Final results take one year.

Hair Transplant FAQs

How long does a hair transplant take?

Most procedures take several hours, depending on the number of grafts and whether FUE or FUT is used. You go home the same day.

Is a hair transplant permanent?

Transplanted follicles are taken from areas that are resistant to pattern hair loss. Once they grow, they are expected to last long-term. Hair loss can still progress in untreated areas.

When will I see results after a hair transplant?

Some transplanted hairs shed in the first few weeks. New growth usually begins around 5 to 6 months, with gradual improvement over 9 to 12 months.

Does FUE or FUT look more natural?

Both methods can produce natural results when planned and performed correctly. The choice depends on donor hair, hair loss pattern, and long-term goals.
